Coachella is as much a fashion festival as a music festival with Revolve, Loft, Poosh, NYX and Pandora among the brands that “activated” this year. While I didn’t make it to the desert, I did watch the show play out over social media and was struck by how much biker babe with a side of “Mad Max” dystopia seemed to emerge as a key aesthetic among attendees, in addition to all the sheer, nearly nude looks, of course.
The industry’s hottest brand …
Miu Miu had more of a presence than I’ve seen before, with logo hats, bra tops and tanks, teenie tiny skirts and shorts and roughed-up biker boots worn by lots of stylists and influencers including Teyana Taylor, Danielle Estrada, Leonie Hanne and Maeve Reilly.
And not surprisingly, there was a big vintage play, with Hailey Bieber’s 1990s Mugler tank top the prime example.
Onstage, Ralph Lauren scored with Billie Eilish giving major exposure to the trademark pony with her striped Polo shirt; rising designer Dilara Findikoglu dressing Lady Gaga in a filmy white corseted gown for one costume change of her “Mayhem in the Desert” goth extravaganza; and Etro outfitting Shaboozey in a very Nudie-like embroidered Western suit.
L.A. labels got time in the spotlight, too, with the Go-Gos’ Belinda Carlisle previewing the sequin dusted “Neon Tuileries” floral skirt from the summer collection of Le Superbe designed by Jeannine Braden. She paired it with a silvery top modified from the brand’s Kate dress.
“It’s been so well received on social media…Thank god something good is happening because business in general has been super challenging, especially for a smaller brand,” said Braden.
She put the $345 skirt up for pre-order on her website on Sunday and it is selling well.
Braden has dressed Carlisle for numerous performances, including when the Go-Gos were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The two first met in 1981 in Marina Del Rey, Calif., where Braden was working at a shop just out of high school called Blondies. (She went on to a career in retail opening Fred Segal Flair, of course.) But they didn’t work together until Carlisle set out on her solo career, and Braden styled her in a black turtleneck, tights and heels for her first album cover, “Belinda” in 1986.
Less wearable perhaps, but no less impressive, Lisa’s eye-popping solo set featured a red leather star bustier and hot pants look by legendary L.A. jewelry and costume designer Michael Schmidt, who has created looks for Madonna, Cher and many more. (Major kudos to New York designer Asher Levine for the incredible pieces he contributed to the performance, too, including that scaly reptilian catsuit and light-up iridescent bodysuit with tendrils.)
And Paris Hilton wore a fishnet catsuit by L.A. designer Hana O’Connor, one of 50 women to receive a grant through Hilton’s nonprofit 11.11 Media Impact after her business was destroyed in the recent wildfires.
“Hana’s a rave queen with serious vision and I’m so proud to wear her design in the desert,” Hilton wrote on Instagram. Doing good by looking good.
